I write novels of historical fiction. But the characters are real people who lived in interesting times. Sometimes, their names are on marriage registries, censuses or tombstones. Hints of their lives may be found in deeds, wills, and obituaries. History books describe the events they lived through or died in but not the parts they played. I know they existed because they were my ancestors. But I know only a handful of dry facts, footnotes to history. I know more about the land on which they lived than the lives they lived. In order to know them better, I imagine what they might have experienced and convert my imagination into novels: truth through fiction.
